Nestled within the vibrant Crossroads Arts District, the Outreach Event Space building history holds a fascinating story. Originally, it was part of Old Film Row, a unique sub-district with a rich cinematic heritage that goes back to the very beginning of motion pictures. In this blog post, we delve into the historical significance of Old Film Row, its architectural treasures, and the beautiful renovations that have transformed our neighborhood and venue into a thriving hub of collaboration, community, and celebration.
Old Film Row was a vibrant center of the golden era of cinema, where Kansas City’s film industry flourished. In its heyday, this district served as a bustling hub for production companies, theaters, and film-related businesses. The architectural character of the buildings in Old Film Row is the crown jewel of the district. Each structure holds its own unique history and charm.
Our event space, formerly owned by Buena Vista Productions, was a part of the iconic Walt Disney Company. It played a significant role within Old Film Row. Its presence added a touch of glamor and creative energy to the district, serving as a beacon for cinematic endeavors. The building’s architecture reflects the distinct style prevalent during that era, with its grand façade and intricate details, serving as a testament to the rich heritage of the film industry.
In 2017, our venue underwent a transformative journey when it was purchased by Outreach International. The old building was given new life as an office space designed to inspire collaboration and foster a sense of community for the international poverty relief nonprofit. The first major renovation restored the architectural integrity of the building while creating a modern and functional workspace.
Building upon the success of the initial renovation, a second round of renovations in 2021 focused on transforming the main floor into an exquisite event space. While preserving the architectural charm of the building, two rooms previously used as an office gym and a storage room were reborn as stunning wedding party suites. And the main event space received careful attention. It ensured its original brick walls and high ceilings were accentuated, and string lights add a welcoming ambiance for a variety of celebrations.
Lots of people work hard to make it special. But the origin of the Outreach Event Space was made possible by a committed, small group of donors. They assisted in the purchase and initial renovations of the building as the Outreach International office. The unwavering dedication of our supporters has not only sparked the growth of Outreach International. It has also contributed to the restoration of Old Film Row’s architectural legacy, creating a remarkable event space that honors the district’s cinematic heritage.
Today, this building stands as a testament to the power of transformation, community support, and architectural preservation. By choosing our venue, you’re embracing a piece of Old Film Row’s cinematic history and celebrating amidst architectural splendor. You’ll also be celebrating in an affordable event venue in the heart of Kansas City’s Crossroads District.
